Waste bins in Malaysia, there is a broad range of definitions when it comes to describing the the simple waste bin. It has many names and depending on where you live, it may look and be called differently. Commonly known as a waste container, trash can, dustbin, garbage can and rubbish bin. There is no exception when it comes to Malaysia, in Bahasa we just simply call it “Tong Sampah“.
Now whatever name you would like to give your bin. The main idea behind it is very simple. It is a mean of storage for where you place your rubbish. It is a container where rubbish awaits to be collected from your home, commercial outlet or industrial zone by the local municipal or waste collector.
The most frequent colour of waste bins in Malaysia is green. The green stands for the ideology of keeping our home, this Earth a greener place to live. Therefore it helps the waste bin blend into the environment; making it less of an eye sore and more of a permanent facture of the environment.
Domestic Waste
In the photograph below you can see two of the most common waste bins used by the waste collector Alam Flora. To tackle domestic waste from houses, apartments, commercial outlets and even factories around the Klang Valley in Malaysia. The MGB120 Two Wheel Bin and MGB660 Four Wheel Bin are perhaps the two most popular sizes or models that you can find around the Klang Valley.
Bins in Rural Areas
A popular but slightly outdated waste bin found in Malaysia is the Leach Bin. Usually made completely from sturdy metal sheets and comes with metal castor wheels. They are normally deployed in villages and rural areas where sorting of waste is less pronounce.
Moving Large Volume of Waste – RORO Bins
When moving large volume of waste, undoubtedly nothing comes close the capacity of the RORO (Roll-On Roll-Off) Bin. For instance, these bins are usually places at constructions sites, houses for renovation works. The RORO bin can be easily moved by trucks. As these bins are made entirely out of heavy duty steel sheets, therefore we can conclude that they are extremely durable and when when the times comes, given a second life with fresh coat of paint.
Recycling Bins
Recycling bins comes various shapes, sizes and colours. However contrary to popular belief, there is actually no proper standards in Malaysia or worldwide.
According to Waste Management Association of Malaysia; three different bins are recommended which are “Blue” for Paper, “Brown” for Glass and “Orange” for Plastics and Metals. Unfortunately we strongly disagree on this as combining plastics and metal in one bin defeats the purpose of separation at source. In the diagram below we can clearly see the breakdown of waste by households and commercials in Malaysia.
Medical Waste Bins
Medical Waste Bins or at times referred to as clinical waste bins are less commonly know to the public. owever its importance should not be taken for granted. For instance in our daily battle to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, these bins are on the front-line where rubber gloves, syringes, and other infectious or contaminated waste are disposed of.
